It has a maximum magnet energy range of 16-25 MGOe and can withstand temperatures up to 250°C, but its maximum magnetic energy product is lower than that of 2:17 samarium cobalt. Its mechanical properties and ductility are better than 2:17, making it easier to machine, and it is less brittle when used. This makes it possible to create shapes such as blocks, rings, and special shapes of various complex shapes with particularly thin thicknesses or walls, which cannot be formed with a 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet.
The magnetizing magnetic field for the 1:5 samarium cobalt magnet is also lower than that of the 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet, usually needing only 40,000 gausses to become saturated, while the 2:17 high coercivity samarium cobalt magnet needs a magnetizing magnetic field of 60,000 gausses or higher. As the rare earth content in the formula of the 1:5 samarium cobalt magnet is nearly 40%, it is more expensive than the 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet. When selecting which type of magnet to use, users should consider their purpose of use and decide between 1:5 or 2:17 samarium cobalt magnets accordingly.
