Aluminum Nickel Cobalt Magnets (AlNiCo Magnets)

Aluminum Nickel Cobalt Magnet (AlNiCo Magnet) is a permanent magnet mainly composed of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt, with small amounts of other elements such as iron, copper, and titanium. They have high magnetic permeability, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance, and can still maintain high magnetic properties at high temperatures. AlNiCo Magnets can maintain their magnetic properties in the temperature range of -200 ° C to 500 ° C. AlNiCo Magnets are widely used in fields such as electric motors, sensors, generators, relays, guitar pickups, speakers, and electronic instruments.

Although AlNiCo Magnets have strong magnetic properties, their coercivity is relatively low, which means they are easy to magnetize. However, they also have extremely high corrosion resistance and are suitable for outdoor or harsh environments.

AlNiCo Magnet is a type of permanent magnet with excellent magnetism, stability over a wide temperature range, and corrosion resistance. They are widely used in various applications that require strong and stable magnetic fields.

AlNiCo Magnets are usually prepared using Casting or Sintering processes. Generally, Sintered Alnico Magnets have higher magnetic properties than Cast Alnico Magnets. Sintered Alnico Magnets are made by pressing Alnico Alloy powder into shape at high temperatures. This manufacturing process enables Alnico Magnets to have high magnetic properties. Cast Alnico Magnets, on the other hand, are formed by pouring molten Alnico alloy into a mold. This manufacturing method results in the presence of numerous grain boundaries and pores inside the magnetic core, thereby reducing the magnetic properties of the magnet. So, generally speaking, the magnetism of Sintered Alnico Magnets is higher than that of Cast Alnico Magnets. However, the specific magnetic differences also depend on factors such as alloy composition, manufacturing process, and post-treatment.

Alnico Magnets must be strictly kept apart from other magnetic materials in actual application or shipping process, especially Neodymium Magnet Material, due to the low coercive force of alnico permanent magnets, in order to prevent irreversible demagnetization or disorder of magnetic flux distribution.

Production Process of AlNiCo Magnets

Sintered AlNiCo Magnets and Cast AlNiCo Magnets are two common processes for manufacturing AlNiCo Magnets.

The manufacturing process of  Sintered AlNiCo Magnets is as follows: 

Raw material preparation: Mix the powder of aluminum, nickel, cobalt, and other alloy additives evenly in a certain proportion.

Pressing: Place the mixed powder into a mold and apply high pressure to achieve a certain density, forming a green body (an unsintered material block).

Sintering: Place the green body into a high-temperature furnace, and during the sintering process, the material undergoes high-temperature heating. Solid phase diffusion and grain growth occur between the powder particles, forming a dense bulk material.

Magnetization and heat treatment: The sintered aluminum nickel cobalt magnet needs to be magnetized through a magnetic field to obtain magnetism. Then, heat treatment is carried out to improve the coercivity and stability of the magnet.

Production Flow of AlNiCo Magnets

The manufacturing process of Cast AlNiCo  Magnets is as follows: 

Raw material melting: Place raw materials of aluminum, nickel, cobalt, and other alloy additives in a furnace, heat them to their melting point, and melt them into liquid alloys.


Casting: Pour the melted alloy into a pre-prepared mold and cast it according to the desired shape and size.


Cooling: The alloy cools and solidifies in the mold to form the desired shape of an aluminum nickel cobalt magnet.


Precision machining: Cast aluminum nickel cobalt magnets that have undergone cooling and solidification usually require magnetization and subsequent processing to achieve the required performance and accuracy.

In terms of the manufacturing process, the sintering process is suitable for manufacturing AlNiCo Magnets with complex shapes and large sizes, with high density and good wear resistance. The casting process is suitable for manufacturing AlNiCo Magnets with simple shapes and small sizes. Compared to the sintering process, the manufacturing cost of the casting process is relatively low. The selection of a suitable process depends on factors such as product requirements, shape, and size, as well as manufacturing costs.

Cast AlNiCo Magnets VS Sintered AlNiCo Magnets 

Sintered AlNiCo Magnets and Cast AlNiCo Magnets are two common manufacturing processes for Aluminum Nickel Cobalt Magnets. There are several differences between them:

Process: The Sintered AlNiCo Magnets adopt a metallurgical sintering process, while the cast aluminum nickel cobalt adopts a melt-casting process. The sintering process requires the pressing and sintering of powder raw materials, while the casting process involves casting the melted alloy into a mold, cooling it, and forming a magnet.

Material performance: Sintered aluminum nickel cobalt has good magnetic properties and high-temperature stability, suitable for applications in high-temperature environments. Cast aluminum nickel cobalt has poor magnetic properties, but has good processing and magnetic assembly properties, suitable for applications with complex shapes and high processing requirements.

Appearance and size: Sintered aluminum nickel cobalt usually has a dense block structure with a large shape and size, and the surface often requires subsequent processing to achieve the required accuracy and shape. Cast aluminum nickel cobalt is relatively small and can directly obtain the required shape and size based on the design of the mold.

Cost: Generally speaking, the manufacturing cost of sintered aluminum nickel cobalt is relatively high, as high-temperature furnaces and subsequent processing are required during the sintering process. The manufacturing cost of casting aluminum nickel cobalt is relatively low, as it can be directly cast and formed in the mold, and the processing process is relatively simplified.

Sintered AlNiCo Magnets are suitable for manufacturing magnets for large-sized and high-temperature applications, while cast aluminum nickel cobalt is suitable for manufacturing magnets with smaller sizes and complex shapes. When choosing a manufacturing process, consideration needs to be given to specific application requirements, costs, and product requirements.
